Actor and comedian Rajpal Yadav has once again received conditional relief in his long-running cheque-bounce case. The Supreme Court has given him two weeks to deposit ₹2 crore with the court registry and has directed him to surrender his passport.

The case is nearly 15 years old and goes back to Rajpal Yadav’s directorial film ‘Ata Pata Laapata’. What began as a financial arrangement for making a film eventually turned into a prolonged legal battle involving bounced cheques, settlement attempts, court proceedings, imprisonment and repeated payment commitments.

What Did the Supreme Court Order?

During the September 15, 2026 hearing, the Supreme Court granted Rajpal Yadav interim relief but imposed strict conditions.

He has been given two weeks to arrange a demand draft of ₹2 crore and deposit it with the Supreme Court Registry. He has also been directed to surrender his passport.

The court adopted a strict approach while considering his previous payment commitments and the long history of the dispute.

The message was clear: Rajpal Yadav has been given another opportunity, but he must comply with the conditions imposed by the court.

Why Was ₹5 Crore Mentioned Earlier?

There was another important development during the previous hearing.

On September 8, the Supreme Court had granted Rajpal Yadav conditional protection from surrender, subject to a ₹5 crore deposit with the court registry.

The matter was subsequently taken up on September 15, when the court gave him another two-week window to deposit ₹2 crore and surrender his passport.

Therefore, the ₹5 crore and ₹2 crore directions relate to different stages of the proceedings and should not be treated as the same payment order.

How Did the Rajpal Yadav Case Begin?

Rajpal Yadav Was Convicted in 2018

In 2018, a trial court convicted Rajpal Yadav and his wife Radha Rajpal Yadav in connection with the cheque-bounce cases.

Rajpal Yadav was initially sentenced to six months in prison.

The verdict was challenged before higher courts. Subsequently, the sentence was reduced to three months of simple imprisonment, with the sentences in the seven cases directed to run concurrently.

This meant that the sentences would not be served one after another.

Settlement Attempts Continued for Years

Over the years, Rajpal Yadav and his legal team made several attempts to resolve the dispute through settlement.

There were payment assurances, proposed instalments and requests for additional time.

At different stages, courts provided opportunities for the actor to fulfil his commitments and settle the financial dispute.

After difficulties surrounding the fulfilment of payment commitments, Rajpal Yadav was directed to surrender.

He subsequently surrendered and spent time in Tihar Jail.

The development became a major talking point in Bollywood, considering Rajpal Yadav’s long career as one of Hindi cinema’s most recognisable comic actors.

Delhi High Court Upheld His Conviction

In July 2026, the Delhi High Court upheld Rajpal Yadav’s conviction in the seven cheque-bounce cases.

The court retained the three-month simple imprisonment sentence, with all seven sentences running concurrently.

The court also directed payments towards the complainant and declined to provide him complete relief.

What Is Rajpal Yadav’s Defence?

Rajpal Yadav’s legal team has argued that the dispute was subsequently subject to settlement arrangements between the parties.

According to his side, a later agreement altered the financial arrangement and provided for a fresh settlement between the parties.

His lawyers have argued that the subsequent settlement should have a bearing on the original cheque-bounce proceedings.

The complainant’s position, on the other hand, is that the financial liability and dishonoured cheques remain legally relevant and that repeated commitments regarding payment were not fulfilled.
